My third trip outside the academy, one I assumed was far from my last, began there on the second level below ground. The exit was something like a railroad with small, open cars in place of the train. I was settled into one of them, and the whole procession headed off. After a slow start, we picked up more and more speed, the commander keeping a close eye on his map and pressing a lever every once in a while. A metallic grinding sound rang out as we turned into other tunnels. When I realized the scale of the underground network, I just about gaped in surprise—the entire capital was crisscrossed by the rails. And there were even separate branches. How hard it was being a provincial kid in the big city. Finally, our momentum slowed, and we stopped a minute later next to another wagon just like ours. It wasn’t the only one, however.
